Mr. Gimpel has worked in the international shipping and ports industries for his entire career. He has been advising leading stakeholders in the ports and shipping sector for the last 18 years. Prior to founding Mercator International in 2008 he was the leader of the ports and maritime practice area of TranSystems Inc. Mr. Gimpel successfully developed terminals in Panama, Chile and Mexico during his tenure as Senior Vice President for International Business Development with Stevedoring Services of America. Charles is running Steptoe & Johnson's European antitrust practice, which includes a team of 8 – four partners/consultants and four associates. He has an economist in his team and Japanese capabilities in London and also in the US.

In terms of cartel cases, he has run about 16 cases in recent years including many for Japanese companies: baggage handling, air cargo, air passenger, 6 in the auto parts sector, Libor/Tibor banking cartel case, plus the support of course for NYK. He is also doing cartel litigation cases in Europe. There are several in London and one in the Dutch national courts and one which has been referred to the European Court of Justice.

Joe Hurley heads up HWL Ebsworth’s National Maritime Trade and Transport practice and is based in our Sydney office. Prior to joining the firm, Joe qualified as a solicitor in England and worked for the well-known international firm Richards Butler (now Reed Smith) in its London and Abu Dhabi offices. Joe arrived in Australia in 1994 and was a partner at Norton Smith solicitors and a founding partner of Norton White. Prior to the merger, he was National Head of Transport at Ebsworth for 6 years, and has now held this role for 15 years.

Joe primarily advises in all aspects of international and domestic shipping disputes whether wet or dry as well as regulatory matters. After working in a world leading shipping line NYK Line for 32 years and finally as a senior management staff in HK and South China, I thought it was the time to work something else. Carozplus is one of them. I has no daily duties in the office but I rather focus more on relationship built with shipping lines.
